Abstract
This paper examines the historical development of the new monastic textbooks authored by Jamyang Shepa at Gomang Monastic College in Drepung Monastery from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century, including a detailed classification of the main textbook (Yig cha dngos) and supplementary textbooks (Zur lta'i yig cha). It then explains Gomang College’s unique method of preserving its tradition by adopting the old textbooks as supplementary textbooks when the new monastic textbooks gradually replaced them as the main textbooks. Comparing two different editions of the textbooks, the Gomang and Labrang Editions, it explains that the Gomang Edition, which was engraved later than the Labrang Edition in 1804, combines Jamyang Shepa’s earlier compositions at Gomang College with additions from his later compositions in the Labrang Edition. Furthermore, in a textual comparison of eight chapters in his Decisive Analysis of (Maitreya's) Ornaments for Clear Realization in the two editions, and by confirming that the Seventh Chapter that was lost during the Qing Dynasty’s military activities in Amdo around 1724 and then rewritten by his disciple, Ngagwang Tashi, was added in 1944 to the Gomang Edition, this paper suggests that it is probable that Gomang College taught the Perfection of Wisdom class without the Seventh Chapter and that the class ran without many issues because Tsongkhapa’s Golden Garland of Eloquence, the old monastic textbook, and the chapter on momentary training in his Seventy Topics could systematically supplement the missing chapter.
